5 Habits You Can’t Afford to Put Off

Healthy Foods

People who are aging in a positive way engage in the following lifestyle habits:

1. Eat breakfast. Positive agers (Pas) eat breakfast every single day. No, a calorie and sugar loaded donut and a cup of coffee do not count as breakfast. A nutritional breakfast is one that is high in fiber and other nutrients such as protein. Breakfast gets your metabolism revved-up resulting in more energy and fat-burning benefits throughout the day.

2. Eat healthy. PAs understand the importance eating healthy. My octogenarian friend told me that she attributes her longevity to her decision to take charge of her health, specifically concentrating on the foods she ate.  She avoids high caloric carbohydrates, high sodium, and sugar. She eats plenty of fruits and vegetables; and NEVER adds sugar or salt to anything.

3. Exercise. PAs engage in some kind of exercise every single day or at a minimum five days a week. Studies show that exercise, at any age, is beneficial. For example, there are health, longevity, and psychological benefits to exercise. And, the more you do, the more benefits you experience.

4. Pay attention to their dental health. PAs understand the benefits of good dental hygiene – a sparkling smile, healthy gums, fewer cavities. They also know the impact that poor dental hygiene can have on overall heath. Therefore, PAs are committed to flossing and brushing at least twice a day. And, they see their dentist at least once a year.

5. Use sun screen and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Everyone should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and wear sun screen. While the risk for skin cancer is lower the darker your skin, lower doesn’t mean zero. People of color may not wrinkle as fast as their blond, blue-eyed, freckled or lighter-skinned sisters, but their skin can also suffer the same kind of damage which includes skin cancer.

Think on this: Which of the above lifestyle habits you practice on a daily basis?

Your Older Self Will Thank You

-thank-you-written-in-the-sand-on-the-beach

Whether you’re approaching 50 or pushing 60, here are 5 habits your older self will thank you for.  Not only will your older self thank you, but so will your loved ones. Most of these habits I started in my early 30s; and still today, I wish I had done more.

1. Start an exercise regimen and stay with it. Start this early because over 25, your metabolism slows down; and it becomes harder to lose weight. If you start this habit early enough, it becomes a habit. I have been exercising for well over 30 years. It’s what I do. Exercising comes as naturally to me as breathing.

2. Mind your money. This is a no-brainer, regardless of age. Don’t fall into the “money doesn’t matter trap”. It’s ok to be young and broke. But, there is nothing glamorous (or even pretty) about being old and broke. It can be UGLY! So, save…for retirement, for a rainy day, for opportunities, for those unexpected emergencies. Like exercise, make saving a natural part of your life. Never too late to start saving.

3. Take control of your health. This means taking care of your body, making wise and healthy food choices. Think of your body as you would a car. Would you fuel your car with junk instead of the right fuel? Would you use water instead of oil or gas? Probably not. Because either your car wouldn’t run properly or not run at all. Just as your car needs certain care to run efficiently, so does your body. You wouldn’t put junk in your cars’ gas tank; so, why would you put it in your own gas tank – your precious body?  Taking control of your health also means getting those routine annual checkups, including dental.

4. Make yourself a priority. Another way of saying this is: put yourself first or take care of yourself. Taking care of yourself is not only the right thing to do; it’s the responsible thing to do. You can’t adequately take care of others if you haven’t taken care of yourself.

5. Live with purpose. We all have a reason for being; a purpose. People who live with purpose remain active and engaged much longer than those who are not. So, find yours and live it! Forget your age and live with purpose.

How many of these habits are you currently engaged in? Let me hear from you.

6 Exercises to Reduce the Effects of Aging

Yoga_-_Worlds_Oldest_Yoga_Instructor1.JPG

  1. Strength Training. Strength training is the only exercise proven to slow down the aging process. It prevents muscle loss that normally accompanies aging. Additionally, it strengthens bones, muscles, tendons thus lowering the chance of injuries.
  2. Walking. Walking is the simplest positive change you can make to effectively improve heart health. Also, it reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, improves blood pressure and blood sugar levels, reduces the risk of osteoporosis, breast and colon cancer, diabetes, and obesity.
  3. Dancing. Dancing burns roughly 200 calories per hour, and works not only the major muscles but is also a fantastic cardiovascular workout. And, because it requires brain functioning as well as physical control, social dancing has even been proven to reduce and possibly eliminate dementia as we age.
  4. Tai Chi. Tai Chi is meditation in motion. Many practitioners of tai chi believe that is delays aging and prolong life, increases flexibility, strengthens muscles and tendons, and aids in the treatment of heart disease, high blood pressure, and arthritis. As we age, tai chi helps with balance and flexibility.
  5. Swimming. Swimming improves endurance, builds muscle mass, and has significant cardio benefits which is good for your heart.
  6. Yoga. Yoga promotes balance, increases flexibility, strengthens muscles, and can help prevent falls.

Pick one you enjoy. Then, do it!
